Probation and driving test in your VTC

ETS2 + ATS

How a trial driver becomes a driver – probation, the message "It is time for your driving test!", the button "Start driving test", your one test drive and the role afterwards.

On this page3

When a VTC accepts you, you start as a trial driver (see Apply to a company). With the driving test you then show your VTC that it can rely on you. Every VTC sets its own conditions – how long the probation lasts and how many tours and kilometres belong to it is therefore not written here but on your card. For the test drive itself every VTC uses the same minimum distance as the general driving test – it is on your card too.

Two different tests: your VTC's driving test is not the general driving test under "Account". You need the general test for bigger steps such as your own yard or founding a company – see Is there a driving test?. The test on this page belongs to your VTC and only counts there: even if you already passed the general one, your VTC can still ask for its own.

Subcontractors: the VTC driving test is only a duty for employed drivers. As a subcontractor you get no message and do not have to take a test – you move up by your VTC's conditions, or the owner or personnel promote you by hand. If you later switch from subcontractor to employed, your VTC can then ask for the test: you get the message "It is time for your driving test!" and the button, even if you are already a driver – you keep your role.

Voluntary as a subcontractor: if you are a subcontractor and still a trial driver, you can also take your VTC's driving test voluntarily. Your card then shows "Voluntary driving test" with the button "Start driving test" – no message, no reminder. If you pass, your probation ends by your VTC's rules.

How it works#

  1. Probation: you drive tours for your VTC as usual.
  2. Conditions met: as soon as you reach your VTC's conditions, you get the message "It is time for your driving test!" – and the button "Start driving test" appears on your start page.
  3. Start the test: you decide when it begins. Press "Start driving test" and confirm with "Yes, start now" – your test starts right away.
  4. Your test drive: your next finished tour that is long enough is your test drive – exactly one tour, earlier tours do not count. It must be at least as long as for the general driving test (the number is on your card). A shorter tour does not count: your test simply keeps running, you do not fail because of it, and your mailbox tells you once. Drive clean and stick to the rules.
  5. Passed: you automatically get the role your VTC chose for it – usually driver. That message lands in your mailbox too.
  6. Not passed: you may retake the test after a waiting time that gets longer with every further attempt. Your card and your personnel file show from when you can try again. Once the waiting time is over, the button comes back.

If your VTC decided to promote trial drivers itself, you get no message and no button – the owner or personnel then make you a driver by hand.

The card on your start page#

As long as you are a trial driver, the card "Your probation" sits at the very top of your start page:

  • three bars for Days with us, Tours and Distance – each showing how far you are and what your VTC asks for
  • above them, what is still missing: "… to go – then comes your driving test."
  • everything met: "It is time for your driving test!" with "You have met everything. Start your driving test when you are ready – it is one single test drive." and the button "Start driving test"
  • before it starts, the card asks: "Start now? Your next finished tour is your test drive." – "Yes, start now" or "Cancel"
  • while the test runs: "Your driving test is running – drive your test tour now." – usually together with the role you will have afterwards
  • under the button, in the question and while the test runs: "Your test drive must be at least … km long – shorter tours do not count."
  • not passed: "Test not passed – you can retake it from …" with the date
  • waiting time over: "Your waiting time is over – you can retake your driving test now."

You also get the result of your test drive in your mailbox.

For owners: driving test and the role after probation#

  • In the company office you choose under "From trial driver to driver" how it works in your VTC – ① or ②.
  • ① Automatic (set from the start): once the probation is met, the trial driver gets the message "It is time for your driving test!", starts it with a button and is promoted after passing the test drive.
  • ② The VTC decides itself: no message and no button – the owner or personnel make the trial driver a driver by hand.
  • Under Roles & rights tick "A trial driver gets this role after passing the test" on one grade. Only one role can carry it; its card shows the label "After probation". Without a tick a trial driver becomes the next grade that is not handed out by hand only.
  • You and everyone allowed to manage staff get a message when a trial driver passes. If your VTC assesses the test by hand, your mailbox also tells you as soon as a trial driver has started the test.
  • In the personnel file you see for every test whether it was passed, when it took place and from when it may be retaken.
